I find my self in an unusual situation: covered up in work! I have several pressing deadlines and havent been able to work on my garden in weeks. Hopefully this weekend I can get some manure and leaves and compost on the beds before first frost, which is close. Ive been shooting jewelry again for a company in NYC. I love doing this work, it pays well, and its much much easier than illustration.
I am also still working on the movies for the Chamber of Commerce and have some more video work lined up. Then I am planing on having an open studio sale the weekend after Thanksgiving. Handmade Holiday. However, today I have to illustrate a holiday card for a local bank. I painted 2 yesterday and dont like either one. That's rare for me, I usually get it on the first try. So I start my workday today with a psychological deficit. Let's hope the mind clearing country stroll worked its magic. Have a terrific day!

Marigolds

Marigolds do not get much love as a cut flower. Most people use them as a companion plant for tomatoes; they have a natural insecticide and a fragrance that repels critters like rabbits from your garden.
They are absolutely fool-proof they never get any kind of fungus or other heat and wet related problems. It is this ordinariness that prevents many from seeing their possibilities as a cut flower. Now that they have been growing since early spring there are stems long enough to cut and arrange.
I put Marigolds together with Bright Lights Cosmos, Bi-colored and Red Coreopsis, Pinwheel Zinnias, and Persian Carpet Zinnias. The Marigold has a nice ferny leaf so leaving them on is all you need for filler.
Flowers are the most profitable and successful organic thing I offer at the farmer's market. From now on any food I grow I am keeping and eating, giving to friends or canning. Its just too hard to get enough to be able to sell it in bulk, and its not worth it to see all that work walk away in a bag for a few dollars. Food always was my loss leader, Im really there to sell folk art. But with my truck in the shop and my freelance jobs backing up I will probably only do the farmer's market every couple of weeks or so.
Im going to be on a blog break for a few weeks while I paint for a show with a 7/31 deadline. This is a national juried show with good prize money. Ive come close -honorable mention which wasnt a money prize but I did get a great easel and some paint. This year I actually have a strategy and hope it pays off. The show isnt until October, the July deadline is just to see if you can get in. I had one painting get in last year but the other one was rejected. So, I need to focus. I'll be back in August. Enjoy the dog days everyone.

This week I am preparing to attend the 2011 Blogger Summit with Moi and Boxer. One of the highlights, other than spending the weekend with two stellar individuals, is going to the International Folk Art Show in Santa Fe. I've been in a collectors state of mind, and did a virtual collection this morning On Etsy while I had some coffee and planned a little menu of food to take over to my best friend's house, who lost her mother yesterday. We traveled the same path this year with a dying parent, and now we are bonded yet again in our grief. Hope you enjoy this little curatorial exhibition, which features our own blogging friend, Susan Black of 29 BlackStreet.
I have a very small buying budget, but I am determined to find something wonderful and authentic that I can treasure always, and have to remind me of what I know will be a delightful adventure. You know, Im really looking forward to this - its been a bit of the blues these past months, and I am looking forward to filling my eyes with beauty and wonder, having some laughs and exploring a part of the world I've never really seen. I'll be sure to exploit the trip for this blog's fodder; of that you can be sure.
