The Sweet Sound of Spring

3.18.2011

This is the big sound of a chorus of tiny Pseudacris crucifers; the spring peepers. I looked and never saw one. This is the sound of springtime in the mountains.

************************************************

I saw this today and liked it:

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

  1. I love when the Spring Peepers arrive...they are a delightful sound to the ear~~all singing as loud as they can!
The quote is excellent, and truly sums up the state of current humanity. Thanks for posting it.

  3. Hey, I want some spring peepers! Most we ever get is an apocalyptic-like emergence of bullfrogs after a really huge rain (although we were graced with that one fire salamander last year). And that name, Pseudacris crucifer, is hilarious. Sounds like a rap group.

Great Dalai Lama quote. Refrigerator-worthy. Although, so long as governments exist, yes, we will literally kill ourselves to make money.

  4. Ah, yes! I was just telling my kids this morning that the spring peepers are probably just days away. Then they informed me that they had already heard them. Must go scout out some trout lilies, then.

  5. That was a great way to start the day! Read your post from Tuesday as well. Your new website is fabulous and I had no doubts it would be. I'm think about finding interesting sites and have it as a weekly feature for the faithful to checkout so it will at least make that where who knows 10 or even 20 people who don't already read your stuff will visit! Have a great weekend Chickory.

  6. That quote along with the song of the peepers made me tear up. I've never heard anything like this, so thank you. Living in the present, being in the moment? It's not easy for many who have been raised thinking the future is what holds their happiness, only to reach the end of their lives with a long list of things they never achieved. Have a great weekend! xoxox.

  7. That's the soundtrack to an evening in Trinidad: loud.

It brought back great memories for me.

The quote is very apt for me at this point too.

  8. Good afternoon Chickory,

One of the best parts of this season is the soundtrack that mother nature starts to play again.

The new website looks good. And so does the picture of Koby. It definitely didn't need a border.

  9. Hmm. I'm used to frogs with more gutteral kinds of croaks. This is almost between a croak and a chirp.

  10. They are so cute and what a lovely chorus, they sound as if they are chirping ... lovely images of your chickory morning.

  11. I envy you your fresh air moments. I had fresh air today for the first time in a long while. Did my soul good! I love this quote also and reminds me of something I saw on tv recently (portions/briefly) -- an interview with a French author, who said the difference between the French and Americans is that Americans live as if tomorrow is going to be better than today. The French believe tomorrow can't possibly be better than today.

  12. They make a loot of sound for little frogs. I just took the Pudge to camp tonight and it's about 60 degrees and the crickets were out already. And no frogs that I could hear, but their campsite is about 200 yards from the lake.

    Have a good weekend.

  14. Spring peepers. Here on Martha's Vineyard, where I've lived all my life (so far, that is), none of the locals call them peepers. Are you ready for our local name?

  15. The blackbirds have been around for awhile. Saw the first mates, red throat and interested. Pink and white lilies coming up. Tropical boy longs for salt water and bush. Less birds now. Pesticides and tree cutting to grow the poisoned stuff. We're waking up to the virtues of an Organic and Sustainable Jamaica.

    Best to all Chickory Land.

  16. AHL: the quote and the peepers go together: its about being present and appreciating all the beauties that life has to off. we are way too frenetic as a culture. we need to chill.

xl: and thank yOU for the eagles. awesome.

moi: at my friends pond, he has bullfrogs. the tadpoles are so damn big ! and there are hundreds of them. I love their sound too -but they arent around me like the peepers.

stephanie: Lord love the kiddies they are tapped in. Thank you for featuring my work on your blog. and i loved that Mary Oliver poem.

MRM: im glad you liked it! Its tricky to post too much video you never know if people want to invest the time...thanks too about the website i am so glad its over and i can get back to my garden and paints. happy week to you!

  17. boxer: that is a myth that the culture has bought hook line and sinker. I am determined to live as fully as i can as often as i can. I remember seeing an interview with the Dalai and he is the most cheerful person...especially considering he has recently been exiled from Tibet after the chinese took it over.

    aunty: yay

roses: trinidad? who knew there'd be a similar sound in the mountains. yes, chile, apply that wisdom.

Karl: thank you! Koby was enough. I often feel compelled to fill space, but im more tuned into that now and can stop it. Glad you liked the frogs and thanks for looking at my site. really appreciate that.

xdell: first the frogs, then the crickets, then the grasshppers then the cicadas. my friend from ATL came up and spent the night but left the next day (instead of staying the weekend) because she couldnt sleep cause the crickets were so loud!

    faery: xo

    fishy: chirp

dianne: thank you. i had to get a frog image off google cause i could find one!

  18. pam: you know what? I could live in France. or spain. i think europeans do leisure a little better -and more often. but I love us too. I know youve been very busy and i wish you some serious down time SOON>

buzz: really!? i dont have crickets yet. a camping trip! and so the summer begins...yay!

troll: the problem is the winner is determined by facebook likes. I cant win that. remember the wine contest i entered? it was a popularity contest. but that doesnt mean i had the best image -but it added another hurdle to jump. but good luck to you.

silas: LOL! thats hilarious. theres no way that would fly down heah.

turey!! so sad you have less birds. we all do, actually. I was seated at a table with a couple from atlanta in their 80's at a museum event and we got to talking about birds. they told me how many species they used to get...no more. i thought maybe it was just development but no. You get back to your salt and sea. i carry your wisdom with me

    feel no way

    >one love<

  20. Due to the higher power output, this type of solar battery charger can be used to power or recharge larger electronic devices (such as laptops, radios, small TVs, and coolers). With this report you will learn how anyone can learn to be an expert when it comes to battery reconditioning. *It has a switch using which you can change the 3 modes of the flashlight. Getting in touch with one of those furniture removals is not that tough.
