Feed Me Frida

7.07.2010

In honor of Frida Kaho's birthday yesterday, I am re-posting a poem I wrote after my neck surgery. It seems as appropriate as ever - it speaks to the fragility of the collective spirit this summer.

frida catch me
it seems i've fallen
lay me beside your broken column
be my sister
be my guide
my patron saint when bones collide
send me a blackbird
she'll soothe my frown
and i shall stare the curious down

frida watch me
i'll weather this storm
surgeons and pins remaking my form
our sky's grown dark
the earth it's cracked
let beauty and grace keep us intact

frida see me
im the little deer
however severe
i'll be of good cheer
be my sister
be my guide

take me where fearless painters reside
lets soar above
that broken limb
and paint our way out of the trouble we're in

frida watch me
i'll heal in the forest
let there be fusion wherever its porous
the lighting cracked
the river it rages
let beauty and grace flow onto our pages

frida feed me
just like your nurse
the love embrace
of the universe
be my sister
be my guide
we'll trust that abundance will always provide

lets sip the nectar
from our creative protector
and we'll dismiss that sorrowful spectre

frida hold me
I'm sleepy now
that's all the writing these meds will allow
it's raining tonight
i hear it falling
let beauty and grace be our highest calling

  1. I love this poem and I'm glad your neck is no longer broken.

Did you see Google's tribute to her yesterday?

    I think yours is better.

  3. I did not know about a broken neck! How did I not know that about you? I'm really glad you don't have a uni-brow (that I know of) ... but now that you post them, I see your inspiration. Beautiful poetry. It is tough to go through such a major thing. If Frida helps with strength, I'm all for it. PS, no floating on my end of town.

    across the sea
    with healing powers
    of all the trees
    and the birds
    who fly the sky
    to chickory flower
    to electrify
    to rise that heart
    grow it big
    its only for love
    that it live
    inner connecting
    one two three
    peace from me
    to chickory

  10. uni-brow?
Well, a blonde could get away with that at certain distances.
    Say, Toronto.
    nah...
They say the art one puts on canvas
can also be the art of the words.
But such a person would also have dogs..
and possibly two or three birds.

Yeah..Pam said it best, but you sly shy thing you.
Better to get better, and not be wetter...
(referring to the too much rain of Spring)
Ah, well, repair thyself, so that we can again hear you sing!

  12. Whenever I think of Frida Kaho, I think of the movie Salma Hayek did about her. She made the unibrow sexy.

  13. boxer: i did see it, and mayden sent me a text to remind me as well. Frida is the patron saint of painting through pain. (i am not in pain now -or at least not my neck)

/t: that is a great movie! the scene with the bus crash and the gold dust going everywhere is beautiful. and i love how the paintings materialized. a lovely movie all around.

pam: well the thing is...she painted while laying in bed with a damn body cast. so -in other words -no excuses. i have had 2 neck surgeries...i have a plate and some big ol titanium screws holding it all together. ive been good for over 2 years now....its holding....

dianne: originally, i had the classic horse crash and landed on my head and kind of flopped over sideways. then i had pain for years and finally had it repaired...and then, 2 years ago in a pilates class i blew it out again -it was MUCH worse that time. I had to be hospitalized twice because the pain level was so high. after my surgery, i woke up and said "its over" now, i just have to try and keep it together because once you fuse your vertebrae it puts a lot of stress above and below it and its easy to bust it again.

darryl: i would love to see you! i added you to my sidebar. your blog is a lovely thing.

faery: sweet girl. xoxo love to you.

neil: lovely. thank you. my knee is better except any kind of twisting...a soldier? lets hope so. from your lips to Gods ears.

dani: thank you! how are the girls?

moi: yep. i do not like this kind of art, but the sentiment of resurrection is very much to my liking. thanks for linking.

boney: grrrrrrherhahahahaha! i wear a unibrow at all my day of the dead parties. ask mayden. and thank you!

shamu: all history....lets hope it stays that way.

  15. Good morning Chickory,

The way art flows from you, amazes me.
    The words you write.
    The way you see.
Through your own pain, you find beauty.

  18. I'm sorry to hear that dear chickory, sometimes we do think life is over when something traumatic happens to us but we must find the strength to go on, no matter how hard the road to recovery might be.
You must take good care of your neck and that knee sweet girl. xoxoxo ♡

  19. This explains why there is a Frida feeling in much of your work. Are you ailing still?
This was a beautiful entry and your words are plaintive and pure. Thank you.
