In 17 syllables, you've educated me in an area where I previously had no knowledge. Brilliant.

Curmy: oh stop. (thank you!)

GG: The legendary bluesman started on the harmonica and was famously dissed by legendary Mississippi bluesman Son House for being a poor guitar player. Johnson got the last word, as he is known as the spiritual father of many rock guitarists including Eric Clapton. The myth was that Johnson made the classic Faustian wager at the crossroads of 61/49 between the Mississippi line and Memphis. But it was a bottle of poisoned whiskey that killed him - he had being messing around with a married lady. He was only 27 years old.

Along with your visual, I immediately thought of O Brother, Where Art Thou.

I need to drag out my old Robert Johnson album. And Rev. Gary Davis. None better. Lawd.

Great haiku, as always.

"You may bury my body, woooo-oo
Down by the highway side
So my old evil spirit
Can get a Greyhound bus and ride"

Nice history, Chick9!

moi: high praise. thanks a mil moi.

Buzz: so many fine moments in that movie. and the color was perfect, like vintage film.

Blazing Scarlet: i do too. I have the RJ catalog which is a spare and soulful raw vision. one critic said that RJ only existed on records. there are only two verified photographs of him. my favorite blues singer is bobby blue bland - but he is much later. for covers, you cant beat zz tops "dust my broom" for karaoke? i like " come into my kitchen"

czar: i did a series of bluesmen illustrations...no Gary Davis though. I thought your haiku about Melissa was inspired! I went to UG at Mercer University and that was in the late 70's. the place was steeped in the ghosts of Duane and Barry Oakley. But of course that song is Greg's and I heard it told that it was about his guitar - much like BB's Lucille. fun fact: around the corner? lived greg and cher while I was there. you'd see them in Awful House at 3 am.....

aunty: if you are not sure how to start writing a blues song? Greyhound is a good place to start. ;-)

Uh--did ya see this topic in today's WSJ?? Comment wuz RJ and all bluesmen were a reality only after Sears Roebuck made cheap gee- tars available to the masses.

Chickory: Through Mercer Univ. Press -- that fine Baptist institution -- I've worked on a book about the Allmans and ended up with a referral to a few books by Chuck Leavell. On the second one, I ended up working with him directly. There's a great, very friendly voice message from him on my office phone . . . asking for my social security number, of all things. I will never erase that message. "Mr. Bob, Chuck Leavell here. How you doin', my brother? . . ." Pinch me.

If you have a minute, visit my blog. I have a post up, and I was thinking as I was typing it that I'd love to hear your perspective on the matter I've posed. Everybody else, too -- but you especially came to mind.
